The Orthodox Church of Saint Trinity – Hajnówka
The Holy Trinity Church is the most famous Orthodox church in Hajnówka, which in its architecture unites modern, Byzanthine and Ruthenian influences.
The daring architectural project was created by Prof. Aleksander Grygorowicz and with some artistic support of Jerzy Nowosielski. On October 14, 1973 the foundation stone was laid for the new premises and building work was initiated, which lasted until 1992 when the main altar was consecrated.
According to Orthodox tradition the interior of the Cathedral is covered with frescoes referring to late Byzanthine paintings. They were painted by a Greek artist Dymitrios Andonopulos. What attracts attention in the central part of the church is the cross-shaped chandelier ornamented with stained glass-work depicting Virgin Mary and Slavonic saints. It is the only chandelier of this kind in Poland. Stained glass windows, not frequently seen in Orthodox churches, decorate irregularly placed windows. They were designed and made by Prof. Adam Stalony Dobrzański from Cracow.
The Cathedral, apart from its architecture, is also well known for its Orthodox Church Music Festival – “Hajnówka’s Days of Orthodox Church Music.” Since 1982, each year in May numerous choirs from Poland and many other countries come and fill the church with their chants.
